A Plumber and a Sparky Walk Into a Cold House: The Winter Upgrades That Actually Work

There's nothing quite like a Waikato winter morning when your house is set up right: a warm room to wake up to and a hot shower with real pressure behind it. The good news? Getting there is usually only one or two upgrades away.

Josh from Grayson & Co Plumbing and Gas and Hugo from Alectrics spend a good chunk of every winter making exactly that happen in homes around Te Awamutu, Cambridge and the wider Waikato. They're currently working together on a bathroom renovation, so we sat them down and asked: if a homeowner could only do a couple of upgrades before the next cold snap, what should they be?

Hugo's Pick: A Heat Pump That Actually Heats the Room:

"The biggest jump in comfort for most houses is going from a plug-in heater or an open fire to a properly sized heat pump," says Hugo. "A modern heat pump puts out around three to four times more heat energy than the electricity it uses, so it's also the cheapest heating to run."

The catch, he says, is sizing and placement. "An undersized unit running flat out all evening costs more and heats less than the right unit cruising along. We look at the room size, the insulation and the layout before we recommend anything."

Josh's Pick: Mains Pressure Hot Water:

Josh's answer is the one that surprises people. "Honestly? Fix the shower. So many older Waikato homes are still running a low pressure hot water cylinder, and the owners have just accepted that a weak, lukewarm shower is normal. It doesn’t need to be."

Upgrading to a mains pressure system delivers around eight times the pressure of an old low pressure cylinder. "That's the difference between a proper hot shower on a frosty morning and chasing a dribble around the shower box," says Josh. "It's the upgrade people tell us they wish they'd done years ago."

A mains pressure upgrade means replacing the cylinder and checking the pipework can handle the higher pressure. Most swaps are done in a day.

The Small Stuff They Both Rate:

A few smaller jobs that punch above their weight in winter:

Heated towel rail (Hugo): "Warm towels, obviously, but it also helps keep the moisture down in the bathroom."

A decent extractor fan (Hugo): "Winter means condensation, and condensation means mould. A properly ducted fan protects the bathroom and your health."

Hot water cylinder service (Josh): "A quick check of the thermostat and pressure relief valve catches small faults before they turn into a cold shower in the middle of July."

That dripping hot tap (Josh): "A hot tap that drips is pouring your heated water straight down the drain, all winter."
